2020 Collegiate Wind Competition

The Collegiate Wind Competition is an event hosted bianually by the Dept. of Energy. It pits teams from major universities against eachother in a contest to develop prototype wind turbines and a business plan to implement them.

Virtual reality immersion; without the headset

One of the greatest drawbacks of contemporary virtual reality platforms is their clunky headset displays. I worked on a team with other industrial design students and faculty, and with a shoestring budget we managed to create a collapsible geodosic dome and a 270-degree projection system.

Utilizing the deisgn language of New Balance's iconic 574 shoe, I created an area defense drone using the program Sketchbook Pro.

24 Hour Design Sprint

Working with three of my closest friends, I participated in a 24-hour design sprint hosted by the X-Labs at JMU. Our prompt involved the VA Dept. of Transportation. Our solution centered around a crowd-sourced app for identifying potholes and other road hazards alongside an autonomous vehicle that could repair them.

I built a Cape Falcon Kayaks F1 Kayak. This process taught me a lot about woodworking and fine craftsmanship; the importance of details. But, it also taught me to appreciate good design in a whole new way. The creator of this kayak design has been decades and made 1000s of prototypes in pursuit of the F1 design. It is obvious in their construction, every small decision has been meticulously thought out.

The Mission is a Minifigure.

I created a digital impression of the 'Saving Private Ryan' movie poster. Using Rhino I modeled a minifigure and an appropriate scene. I took that scene into Keyshot, applied some labels I made in Illustrator, and rendered some legos. Finally, I took those renders into Photoshop and put together my own LEGO version of the legendary movie poster.

What exists below Europa's icy shell?

Scientists believe there may be liquid water beneath the icy crust of Jupiter's moon Europa. I took some creative license and sketched a storyboard of a soviet probe that drills into Europa's core and finds something quite unexpected.

A nine-day crash course in leadership, innovation, and impact

I got the chance to attend 'Curious U' at the University of Twente in Enschede, The Netherlands. This class gave me the chance to interact with people from all over the world; I was one of two Americans in the entire program. We spoke with local stakeholders, developed business ideas, and after nine days presented our lean ideas.

Started at Stanford in 2012, the University Innovation Fellows program has since spread all around the globe. As a fellow at JMU, my task is to analyze the school ecosystem and work together with my other fellows to drive change. Specifically, UIF strives to increase the level of innovation and entrepreneurship experiences a school can offer its students.
