This program is in fact five different tools wrapped into one platform designed all at once. The powerhead features two different extensions, one leading to an inline handle similar to many other string trimmers and the other to a pair of offset ‘bull handles’ that allow the user to easily sweep the tool back and forth for long periods of time without fatigue. At the end of the pole are several options depending on configuration: a traditional string trimming head, a circular saw-like brush saw, or a tri-tipped blade for brush cutting. Each serves very different purposes, but with a thoughtful approach from the outset of the program we were able to include each of these use cases within the scope of the project.
One of the most important elements of the design is the transition between the powerhead housing at the rear and the secondary housings immediately in front. In person, the transition is hardly perceptible (in fact it is difficult to see even in the renders on this page.) The success of this element decreased the amount of tooling required by this program and decreased the size of each set of housing molds which vastly reduced the scrap rate during manufacture. Driven by ID, the success of this program hinged on the success of this transition.
